“Art Therapy is a means to discover both the self and the world, and to establish a relation between the two”

Elinor Ulman

What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy is a branch of psychotherapy. It uses spontaneous, creative expression within a therapeutic relationship to assist in maintaining a good mental health.

No experience with art materials necessary. All ages welcome. Art therapists are master-level clinicians trained to draw out the inner feelings and emotions of a client, in a safe and non-judgmental manner.

The art object acts as a focus for discussion, self-analysis and reflection.

What happens in an art therapy session?

Each session is modified to the individual client. The art therapist often moves between a client-led non-directive approach to a more direct approach, where themes are given by the therapist. Sessions are 50 minutes long and are held in the same place each week. No one will be judging the artwork with marks out of ten, this is a non-judgemental space and no prior art making experience is needed.

The art therapist will not be making snap interpretations of your work. The therapist provides a range of materials for the sessions, which you can use in what ever way you like. All images created during art therapy sessions are treated as confidential records and are stored safely by the art therapist. When therapy has ended clients are given the opportunity to keep the artwork they have created.

Art therapy is proven to be of benefit to clients experiencing mental health issues such as:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Trauma

  • PTSD/Complex PTSD

  • Bullying

  • Autistic Spectrum Disorders

  • Sensory Impairments

  • Substance Misuse

  • Emotional & Behavioural Disorders

  • Self Harm

  • Eating disorders

  • Chronic pain

  • Bereavement & Loss
